Do you remember your first smoothie? I do! It was a grapefruit juice, orange juice, banana and ice blend that was creamy and smooth. Was it in the late 1960’s or the early 1970’s? I don’t remember but it was before most of you were born! The tart of the grapefruit mellowed by the creamy banana refreshed my palate.

Perhaps it was Jack Lalanne’s influence on fitness and power of juicing or the novelty of the Orange Julius back then that pushed me to that restaurant that served grapefruit, orange, and banana smoothies. That experience won me over; I became an official lover of smoothies.

Almost 50 years have flown by and I am still a lover of smoothies but now I am the one adding a touch of this and that to up the nutrition and flavor. Some smoothies I get a little wild and try out unusual ingredients like cardamom or turmeric! This morning I was feeling nostalgic and returned to my grapefruit, orange, and banana roots but have updated it with the nutrition power and flavor boost of wild blueberries. I think Jack Lalanne would be proud of me!

ONE Wild Blueberry Healthy Benefit:

Natural antioxidants found in wild blueberries helps our bodies protect against disease and age-related health risks. A flavonoid called anthocyanin is especially high in wild blueberries making it have potent antioxidant capacity. One cup of wild bluerries has more total antioxidant capacity than 20 other common fruits; cranberries, strawberries, and raspberries! Wild Blueberries have 2 times the antioxidant powder of ordinary blueberries!

You have heard plenty about the importance of antioxidants over the years. Think of this, every day our cells are waging war against free radicals that are putting out health at risk. By supplying yourself with enough Wild Blueberry antioxidants your body can neutralize the free radicals and help prevent cell damage. Antioxidants also protect against inflammation, thought to be a leading factor in brain aging and other degenerative diseases.

Nutrition is super important to me but so is flavor. Why I use frozen Wild Blueberries so much in smoothies is because of the intense blueberry flavor. I love the consistency of flavor in Wild Blueberries! Haven’t you noticed that when you buy fresh standard blueberries it is hit or miss on the sweetness? I sure have. The texture of frozen Wild Blueberries always makes a smooth smoothie, and isn’t that what it is all about?

Note: Hubby wanted his smoothie sweetened with agave. I love tart smoothies so I opted out of adding agave syrup to mine. I poured my portion first and then added agave to his portion and blended.
